Flag Mirror Disassembly

My flag mirror almost fell off. I removed from the door and see the threaded insert has backed out and stripped some of the threads . Anyway, how do I take the actual mirror apart? Does the rubber piece come off an d allow access to the inside? I need to disconnect the wiring to remove and replace.

First you will have to remove the mirror glass. I think in '84 the glass is still held in place by three metal prongs. Tilt the mirror glass to one side and using a wide flat blade (putty knife) gently pry between the glass and the metal backing plate. Be careful as the heat grid glass can crack easily as well as the prongs breaking off. Once the prongs are free then disconnect the two wires for the heated mirror. The rubber surround and motor come out as an assembly and are held in place by three screws. There are holes in the metal backing plate to access the screws. After the motor assembly is out there will be three screws that hold the flag onto the neck of the mirror housing. From there you're on your own as what to fix.

5Speed,
There is a small hole in the bootom of the mirror housing and a small hole in the bottom of the rubber ring. I couldn't see any screws in there, are those the holes I need to access?

First thing is to remove the mirror glass. I think you have the kind of glass must be pried out. The later years '86 on used a round locking ring to hold the mirror glass on, which can be access by a small hole in the rubber surround. Are your mirrors original or have they been swapped out for a later year?

Since it is original than you have the glass that is held in by three prongs. The small hole is probably for water drain. But just to be sure tilt the mirror in at the top, if you see a black plastic semi-circle with ridges than you have the later lock.

See the black plastic ridges at the bottom of the glass? You would just turn this one way or another to unlock the glass. But I don't think you have that. I think you have this type of glass



with the three prongs. You would need to use a small putty knife or wide blade screwdriver to pry the glass off the backing plate. Then unhook the two wires for the mirror heating element. We can go from there.

I got my replacement used flag mirror and I managed to get it apart to look inside. It is the later type using the plastic ring. I see the hole at the bottom, but how do I get it back together. I feel like a kid trying Rubics Cube.

Not sure if I'm too late to chime in here but......

I also have the later model ('87 930) and found this thread.

You need to gently push the mirror in the full down position. Actually applying pressure until the grooves on the plastic cam ring on the bottom of the mirror show in the slot located on the bottom of the rubber shroud of the mirror assembly.

Using a small flat head screwdriver rotate the cam toward the stalk on the mirror assembly. This is not a screw that needs to be turned. It is a plastic ring at the bottom of the mirror glass therefore you will need to remove the screwdriver and line it up with the next slot on the ring and push toward the mirror stalk again. It should take about three to four pushes to unlock the glass panel assembly from the mirror housing.

To reinstall just reverse the process. Don't push too hard on the cam ring. It should move rather easily. The job is much easier if you remove the mirror from the car using the small allen screw located at the base of the mirror stalk.
