Zoom... Pop!!! Now what... can't get into gear!!!
Friday on the way home from work, I went to shift from 2nd to 3rd. Depressed the clutch and heard a pop. Suddenly, I could not engage any gear. I rolled to a stop and looked underneath. Tugged at the clutch cable and it seemed intact. The pedal moved freely but did not have the feel I had moments before.
What to do? I was 20 miles from my wrench (Mike at Stuttgart Autotech) and wanted to get home. I decided that my clutch was ok and with the car engine stopped put it in second gear. Hit the starter and started going forward. I decided that if I did not shift, I could get home as long I did not need to stop. Carefully timed the lights and the 3:30-4:00 Portland Friday rush hour to not stop the car until I got to Lake Oswego. Mike at Stuttgart took a look at my car right away and said he was not sure, but thought it might be a worn clutch cable as the pedal cluster and throwout bearing arm looked and moved ok. He would get a cable on Monday and let me know his findings. I go home thinking: bad cable, bad pedal cluster, busted fork!!!!?? Monday morning, I get a call. It was the cable. The Bowden tube was kinked and the cable worn. He told me that due to a repair to my tranny by a PO, the casting for the cable guide was at an improper angle and this caused the premature wear. I am back on the road with a noticeablly better feeling clutch pedal and armed with the knowledge I will have a new routine maintence item. Glad I dodged another bullet.

Lars,
Me too. I was glad traffic was moving at the curves on I-5. Have we met at one of the ORPCA Events?

No we haven't I've only had my Porsche about a year and most of that has been in the shop or me working on it. Hopefully next year I can do some of those events and meet some of you fine people.
Just after I bought mine I got stuck on the interchange from the I-84 to I-5 in downtown Portland one truck driver came so close I had to jump on my car to keep from getting hit. What a experience *smile*

Glad to hear you survived.
If your car is running, the club has a tour on 10/1 and an AutoX on 10/23. If you want something more social, we have a dinner meeting every month on the 3rd Wednesday. Check out the web site for info and contacts (www.oregonpca.org)
