I made a bracket that mounts in the window rubber at top of rear window. Wired directly to the brake pedal switch in the driver's pedal cluster. They work great. Had a guy pull up and tell me something must be wrong, that my brake lights were flashing.
I used this light bar, the 12 led size. Its totally invisible when the lights are not on.
Its about 3 1/2 inches long. When the brake is applied the LED will flash for approximately 5-6 seconds then go to a solid on state until the brake is released. No chip needed.
