Flashing brake lights

Don’t come down hard on me for this!
Do those flashing brake lights work on our cars?

Hey, if it helps get you noticed even a little bit, it’s a good safety thing in my book (I’ve been rear-ended, so maybe I am a bit paranoid, but too bad...). I installed on of the little chips that adds flashes on braking, and it works great. I have one of Spoke’s LED panels in my CHMSL; it’s a supurb combination.

Flashing brake “lights” such as what?

And what “chip”? And does the chip flash x number of times and then go solid?

I made a bracket that mounts in the window rubber at top of rear window. Wired directly to the brake pedal switch in the driver's pedal cluster. They work great. Had a guy pull up and tell me something must be wrong, that my brake lights were flashing.
I used this light bar, the 12 led size. Its totally invisible when the lights are not on.

Its about 3 1/2 inches long. When the brake is applied the LED will flash for approximately 5-6 seconds then go to a solid on state until the brake is released. No chip needed.

Just be careful on this. I burnt up a rear light cluster wiring harness on my 996 putting in LED brake lights. Luckily it was an easy, plug and play replacement but was not cheap.

I added this chip to the CHMSL on my '87. It fits inside the housing and, when you apply the brakes, it flashes a quick 4 pulses, then stays solid. A quick and easy install, and adds a great bit of "peace of mind" when braking (along with the addition of a redundant mechanical brake light switch, which is the subject of a couple of other recent threads).

Yes, Barclay, they flash each time I tap the brakes to warn wannabe tailgaters.

I've got a flashing led strip I am looking to install on my RSR-ish project. It will go along the top of the rear window. 4 pulses then solid. I've already had too many near misses from distracted,self-absorbed texters who happen to be behind the wheel of the car behind me.

And good LEDs help as well. At 30 MPH, the speed at which they illuminate fully would lead to a reaction time/distance benefit of about five to ten feet shorter stopping distance for those following. Could be the difference in someone wearing your engine lid I their grill.

Kahtec smart stop brake light

I installed the module on the factory 3rd brake light. Here is the video when I installed it sometime Dec 2014 and it is still working up to now

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqNfHx3A-r4

Here is the product I bought

Blinking Smart Stop - Flashing Brake Light

The Delay Version was designed for those drivers who might not want to continuously flash their third brake light when caught in bumper to bumper traffic. Once you have applied your brakes for the first time causing your third brake light to flash and then turn solid, touching your brakes again within 8 seconds will cause your third brake light to turn on normally without flashing. In other words, you must have your foot off the brakes for more than 8 seconds before the Blinking Smart Stop will reset and cause your third brake light to flash again

The thread title is flashing brake lights, as in plural. Sorry but I wrote technical specs for a few years where words are important and a wrong word could cost thousands. Not like this thread.

On some new cars, I have seen rapid flashing brake lights when first applied. These are no doubt LEDs. This is where I hoped this thread was heading since I have the Knight Riderz flashing LED strip already. My gripe about that strip is that it comes on about a second after the brake lights are activated and this is not good enough where tenths matter. I wrote them about this but of course didn’t hear back.

So has anyone installed a flashing module for both incandescent tail lights?

I completely agree with you; I always appreciate specificity. However, the last time I took note, these cars were in fact equipped with two (or more) brake lights, as in plural. If you were referring to the third centre mounted brake light, regardless of what some respondents are doing on their cars, the OP didn't indicate he was referring to that single light. Not sure why your comment bothered me - must be in a mood mixed with my NTP personality. I'll try to find humour in it and be sure to include a little winky thing to indicate I'm not all bent out of shape about it. Well, not too much at least...

Seriously, just yanking you chain a little...

With regard to the topic at hand, I've seen these flashing lights on some vehicles around town recently. Just today in the lane beside and a couple car lengths ahead with other traffic about, a newish ambulance had the flashy brake lights. When he applied his brakes, the strobe like effect of the flashflashflash, steady really caught my attention. I think these would be a very worthwhile addition to a car in an effort to avoid rear-enders.

Thanks for the heads up as I was about to get one of these.
