Thanks for the suggestion. Getting one side of the ring started out of the channel it sits in and not mangling the car is where I'm stuck. That steel ring is seriously stiff and using something like a BF screwdriver or similar to lever it out would result in mangled paint and/or metal.

I'm hoping there is some clever way to remove that ring without doing any damage.
