Clinton,
Found this info on the web....
The factory never made a RHD car,but there is evidence that they had tooled the shell symmetrically so they could have
produced an RHD version, the only part that does not mirror symmetrically is the gearstick position and the gearchange rod in the
centre tunnel, and through the firewall.(Also note the factory A4 size "no compromise sports car" 914 brochure for 1970,the one
with the grey front cover, which states in small print at the bottom of the last page that "Right hand drive versions not available
for model year 1970") Crayfords,a conversion/modification/tuning company in the UK,converted a number of 914s to RHD,but
nobody knows the exact amount. The cost of this conversion added nearly a fifth to the original price of the car. This hefty
additional expense discouraged most owners from going ahead with the conversion.Apparantely the conversion info was
informally scripted on the back of envelopes and the workshop walls! Some of these original Crayford converted cars were
bought and shipped to other RHD countries like Australia.Apart from the many RHD converted cars in the UK,I personally only
know of one original Crayford converted 914 which is driven regularly and hillclimbed by its current owner.A previous owner
held the lap record at Mallory Park racing circuit, with the same car! The current owner of the car kindly let me photograph this
Crayford car in my quest to obtain as much info as possible before I started my own 914 RHD conversion project.I hope to
submit an article on this labour of love shortly!
