Right hand drive

I know this is an odd question, but has anyone ever seen a kit to make your 914 a right hand drive vehicle. Looking to do something different.

Yes, there were about 11 converted to right hand drive in England. An English coach company, I can't remember there name, did them. The cars are not symetric so it requires cutting and welding in the footbox area. Luckily the steering rack input is in center of the car so allyou have to do is relocate the wheel on the right side. I looked at this mod for vintage racing and was going to do it but the promoter requested I not do it for fear of crying from the competitors. I still think it is very doable and I would love to have my 235 lbs on that side.

Good Luck,
neil

I've seen a couple of 914s for sale in Australia a few years back. They had also been converted. There is actually a HUGH industry there for converting cars from the US (not neccessarily American cars, just high demand used cars bought on the West Coast and exported). I got a "car trader" magazine called UNIQUE CARS when I was there with the Navy. Lots of info and contacts, if you can find the magazine. Or try to locate a 914 fan down under. You will not believe how much a mid/late '80s Camaro will sell for down there!!!

John,
Living in the land "down under", I have a right hand drive 914. If you have some particular questions about the conversion to RHD, send me an email, and I'll help where I can.

Clinton,
I am interested on who did the conversion and how popular this mod is "down under". What about the foot box/pedal assembly? Did they have to change the gas tank? I wish you could take the time to post pics or write an article about RHD 914's. Any info you can provide would be appreciated.
Thanks,
neil

Neil,
Give me a few days and I will draft up some information on the process of 914 conversion to RHD. The photos will take a little longer (have to obtain a digital camera).
914's are not common in Australia. Nearly all have been private imports, with the quality of the conversion ranging from poor to very good.
More info to follow

Clinton,
In the states you can take a picture with a normal camera and when the film is processed have them save the pictures on disk. This is something Kodak does. Its a lot cheaper than a digital camera.
Thanks,
neil

Clinton,
Found this info on the web....
The factory never made a RHD car,but there is evidence that they had tooled the shell symmetrically so they could have
produced an RHD version, the only part that does not mirror symmetrically is the gearstick position and the gearchange rod in the
centre tunnel, and through the firewall.(Also note the factory A4 size "no compromise sports car" 914 brochure for 1970,the one
with the grey front cover, which states in small print at the bottom of the last page that "Right hand drive versions not available
for model year 1970") Crayfords,a conversion/modification/tuning company in the UK,converted a number of 914s to RHD,but
nobody knows the exact amount. The cost of this conversion added nearly a fifth to the original price of the car. This hefty
additional expense discouraged most owners from going ahead with the conversion.Apparantely the conversion info was
informally scripted on the back of envelopes and the workshop walls! Some of these original Crayford converted cars were
bought and shipped to other RHD countries like Australia.Apart from the many RHD converted cars in the UK,I personally only
know of one original Crayford converted 914 which is driven regularly and hillclimbed by its current owner.A previous owner
held the lap record at Mallory Park racing circuit, with the same car! The current owner of the car kindly let me photograph this
Crayford car in my quest to obtain as much info as possible before I started my own 914 RHD conversion project.I hope to
submit an article on this labour of love shortly!

I thought I'd share a couple of pictures for you guys.

My car is 1969 so a very early car
please note the dash, and it still retains the cut oiut for the parking brake on the left side.
The original colour was tangerine.
