New Year's traditions
Having a Japanese background, I prepare food for Oshogatsu. Typically, I make some soba that is eaten at midnight, and some ozoni soup and nishime stew for New Year's breakfast.
As a child, my father used to roll maki sushi on New Year's day and we'd take it to our friends and relatives. My sister makes the sushi to this day.
On New Year's Day, I typically go to a couple of temples, give donations, and buy good luck amulets for the family.
