New Year's traditions

Having a Japanese background, I prepare food for Oshogatsu. Typically, I make some soba that is eaten at midnight, and some ozoni soup and nishime stew for New Year's breakfast.

As a child, my father used to roll maki sushi on New Year's day and we'd take it to our friends and relatives. My sister makes the sushi to this day.

On New Year's Day, I typically go to a couple of temples, give donations, and buy good luck amulets for the family.

What are yours?

We go to bed at 10:30 and sleep till 7:00 am. Get up and do the same things as any other day.
New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are just another day.
I have not stayed up until midnight on NYE since Dec 1999 waiting for the world meltdown, that of course never happened.

Living in Japan that sounds very familiar. I love the Japanese new year’s traditions. The food is interesting all the mochi (pounded rice cakes) dishes are delicious. It’s also traditional to visit the local shrine and pray for a good year, followed by visiting the local family members. All of the school age kids receive little envelopes with cash!

This year we’re in Thailand on vacation, so we’ll just be relaxing poolside.

We usually stay up til midnight and toast the new year. We have Hors d'oeurves for dinner at home, including wings, shrimp cocktail, cheese/crackers, and perogis, and watch a movie or two....usually flip it over to Time's Square (praise God that i'm not there) about 5 minutes before the ball drop, and are in bed by 12:30...no big deal !

Don't do the party thing but always have "Hoppin' John" (black eyed peas, collard greens, rice, cornbread) on New Years Day to bring luck and $$$ in the new year.

Don't do the party thing either, but we always take a champagne picture at the stroke of midnight, finish the bottle, then go to bed. The next morning it's usually breakfast pizza, then for dinner either tamales or red beans and rice. This year will be tamales.

We used to eat Pickled Herring (Fat Scmaltz) and Lentil Soup, but haven't done that in years.

Twilight Zone marathon on SyFy channel all day.

I'm finishing up a cup of Joe and going to work out in my yard. We have weather in the 70's today.

Happy New Year to our friends in the Great Southern Lands!

I spent new year's eve house sitting a friend's cat.

New years day. Fed the cat and had a few games with the cat. That was the major excitement.

Man, you know how to party down!
I was in bed by 11. That may be a tradition for me now...

^^^This is what we USUALLY do, but this year, we took my daughter, and SIL out to dinner for her Birthday (12-31-93) to a Japan West Hibachi and had some of the best Asian we have had in a long time (the bill reflected that sentiment). We were home by 10, my DD, and SIL went out with freinds, DW was asleep at 10:30, and I barely made it to 12:00...whoopee ! I slept till 9 !

We do the home party thing, have beef & chicken Fondue with fresh baked baguette quarters in cheese fondue. Starting with a pieces of shrimp cocktail as appetizer. Then watch the ball drop in NYC and hopefully she watches my balls drop....

fix a nice meal and chill. Each NYE we write out our goals and predictions for the new year and highlights from the last year. stuff these into a sealed manila envelope and stick in the safe for next year. fun reading the previous year's scribbles and always makes for good conversations and reminiscing.

Our tradition is to treat NYE like any other night. I broke tradition this year and stayed up, but by accident. I was reading a good book and midnight came and went without me noticing.
