My bet is on chicken too. Chances of a feral dog grabbing a wild bird is practically nil. That is definitely a domestic bird also because there is too little feather to fully fly. Compare that to the wing of a bird of prey, pigeon etc. Also, in terms of size, it could have been a rooster. Do a search for "flying chicken" to compare. I can't link any images, people are locking them down pretty good nowadays.
I would make sure he isn't getting into your neighbors chicken coop. It may be a dead dog soon otherwise.
Edit: My qualifications are being a bird hunter and former SoCal resident. I have also slaughtered my share of domestic chickens that people give me once they are ready for the 6 qt coop!
