The top is controlled by a brain that (in my case because my car is RHD) sits behind the passenger seat kick board. At the age of our cars it has been known to cause issues. Mine was recently repaired, I believe some solder points had to be reflowed.
There are also a few micro switches left and right of the rear seats and on top of the windscreen that influence the operation. Given the variety of input parameters and connections across the frunk and behind the firewall it is quite difficult to troubleshoot.
