A friend has a BMW i3. Have you looked at those? Not the prettiest thing but surprisingly fun to drive. Dont know about quality on those but it struck me as being somewhat better built.

Nostatic got very excited about EV back when he was here, and IIRC had an i3 that he loved, but then something happened and he changed his tune on BMW or the i3. He didn't/wouldn't say what the issue was though.
