Heh
I need a hybrid for where I need to go - I'd get the CR-V but they don't seem capable of providing them in quantity. |

A friend has a BMW i3. Have you looked at those? Not the prettiest thing but surprisingly fun to drive. Dont know about quality on those but it struck me as being somewhat better built. edit: saw you were looking at SUVs

i3 electric has about an 80 mile range. With the 2 cyl extender, you get about 150 miles. not quite the same as a true modern (Bolt/Tesla3/ Vw ID.4) ev. or Hybrid
Everyone says "40K is too expensive".. but the average new car transaction price is around $38K. If you get a 7500 tax break, well, then its less than the average new car price.

Does it have a gas heater?
Wonder how the range is at -30 deg? You old VW owners from the northern states will know what I am talking about.

The vehicle is appealing.
Buying a pure EV is also buying a charging network. I can't find a good map of public charger locations. "Good" to me means shows type, availability, price. For example, we drive from Portland to Tahoe a couple time a year. Plenty of chargers on I-5, but we often like to go Hwy 99. I should be able to pull up an live online map from the vehicle (don't make me risk a huge ticket for smartphone usage while driving) that shows all the chargers that are - high capacity (DC) chargers - on my route - working (verified in real time to be functioning) - available (how many open chargers right now) - have adjacent food/rest since I'll be stuck there for 20-40 minutes - reservable (I should be able to hit the icon, get charged $50 to reserve that charger starting at my predicted time of arrival for the duration I'll need based on my state of charge. location and route - the $50 prevents me from reserving chargers I won't use, it gets refunded to my card when I plug into the charger) - usable by my car (don't show me Tesla Superchargers if I have a VW, or chargers with one plug type if my car has a different plug). I should be able to open the map, input my route with a couple touches of the screen, then hit one icon to automatically locate the chargers, plan my stops, reserve the chargers, and dynamically adjust the reservation times based on my driving speed. I haven't found that map. I shouldn't have to look hard for it - it should be splashed on VW's website and all over VW's promo materials. Tesla has such a map, more or less, but no superchargers on Hwy 99 . . . Until that is the case, I won't consider a pure EV as the main car. A pure EV for daily commute/errand driver, sure, but I'm not spending $50K for a DD - a used i3 or Leaf for $13K is fine.

i have an eTron and its convenient as long as you dont drive over 180 miles (between charges). After that, anxiety kicks in. Easily charges overnight on a 220V. If you go to the VW charger, it takes 45 minutes from 5% .

I seriously hope it's an improvement over the e-golf.
BTW, electrics and EVs depreciate like a tuna sandwich. Buddy of mine bought one and the saving grace of COVID shutdown is that he may end up with residual value having not driven it in almost 6 months. Originally, the anticipated return value was -$8500 to the lease amount.

They updated the in-car map to add non-superchargers as well as their speed level now. It was just a few versions ago, so later than would be expected, but now it exists. Shows both DC fast charge stations on other networks and destination Level 2 chargers at hotels/wineries/etc. if you want to stop and stay a bit.
