It would help greatly if you identify the MY of your car for help on this forum. ( let us know, year and make.)
Also, when you say temp gage...do you mean Oil or Water temp gauge?
If oil temp, then it could be as simple as the wires are crossed on the temp sending unit.
If you mean the big RED ! symbol...hmmm, that is not good.
