If you have the time - I highly suggest coming up through western Colorado and going through Utah (95, 24, 12 all amazing). Three of us ('79 930, '91 964T, '90 964) made the Monterey trip in '18 for Rennsport and drove a killer route - virtually no interstates. Took us 3 full days (from Denver) with lots of stopping. Happy to give some specific route info if you're interested.
