Monterey road trip
This may be a fool’s errand but it is a bucket list item. I am planning a road trip to Car week in Monterey in my ‘85 Carrera. Leaving from Texas. Does anyone have any advice regarding route, replacement parts to source and carry, advice if the dreaded break down happens...? I have had the A/C rebuilt completely in preparation for an August trip, has new tires, oil, plugs, etc.

make sure you have your hotel accommodations booked in monterey area. Although several car events are not taking place this year, they are forecasting record attendance to all remaining events.
I always have a canvas bag of stuff, I use the canvas bag as its easy to store upfront near the jack but also easy to find things in the middle of the night on that stretch of freeway with no lighting:, Wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, duct tape, knife, wire, fuses, fuel relay, extra oil, gloves, towel, small sections of hoses, clamps, flash light ( I keep one in tool bag and maglight under the seat, jumper cables, ...... blanket and pillow- just in case!! and a AAA membership doesn't hurt. Make sure your wiper blades are good and have the fire extinguisher up front with you PM me and I can give you my cell- should be able to assist if you have issues in Monterey area. Enjoy the drive |

Make sure it hasn't fallen into the ocean before you head, but the PCH is one of the best stretches of roads in the known universe.

Coast Highway 1 pro tip:
1. pray for those Hwy 1 road construction stoplights 2. If you find them, pull over and let all the cars go in your direction and wait until red 3. Move into to first position at light. 4. When light goes green, blast on Hwy 1 with abandon until you catch up to traffic 5. Profit! |

The PCH work is completed and the road is open.

If you're taking Hwy 1, be sure to stop at McWay falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Purple Sand Beach at Mile Marker Mon 45.64. Purple Sand Beach is also famous for its "Keyhole Arch Rock." Lunch at Napenthe's is worth it for the view. Bixby Bridge is a famous bridge that you'll drive across along the way. Stop and take pics if you wish.

I drove from Oklahoma City to Monterey in 2014. I-40 just stops at Barstow. That is not a city worth spending any time in, and not what most people think of when the envision a trip to California. You get to go through other horrid places like Boron, CA.
![]() Other beautiful parts of California like this. Then to Monterey and Highway 1 which are the other end of the scale and just stunningly beautiful. You did not say what part of Texas you are leaving from. Unless it is Amarillo, you likely will be on a more southern route. The one nice thing about I-40 is it goes to Flagstaff. That is a neat town up in the mountains and nice and cool. Needles. Ca was at 118 degrees on my trip home. I hope your AC is in great shape. I have the Griffith's 4 condenser system and it is great, but 118 made it struggle to keep me cool. I never got hot, and when I got to Arizona and it had cooled down 15 degrees to just 103 the AC was doing great. Enjoy the trip. If your car is in good shape it will do that little trip with no problems.

@speedster911 - what events have you heard are canceled? Honestly, as long as the Historics and the Concours are on, I think I'll be OK...

If you are going to make the trip that far to be here, you might as well check out some of the other Nor Cal drives. They are fantastic.
https://rennlist.com/forums/west-us-rennlist-region/998154-sf-bay-area-best-driving-roads-for-a-sunday-morning-blast.html Recommend anything around Skyline/Page Mill from Portola Valley/Woodside/Los Altos to the Pacific. |

If you have the time - I highly suggest coming up through western Colorado and going through Utah (95, 24, 12 all amazing). Three of us ('79 930, '91 964T, '90 964) made the Monterey trip in '18 for Rennsport and drove a killer route - virtually no interstates. Took us 3 full days (from Denver) with lots of stopping. Happy to give some specific route info if you're interested.

Keep in touch if you need something.
Consider a side trip to Canepa in Scotts Valley as they have sometimes held some open house events in parallel with Car Week activities. Not sure about the Porsche/PCA Werks Reunion... if that happens it is also extremely worthwhile. Consider a visit to Carmel, and if you go there, and like to shop, consider Pamplemousse Boutique. It is (or at least was) owned by a long term PCA member and former track driver. She is also the mother of a professional racing driver.

Wow! great info, it's why I love the PCar crowd and this forum. Thank you. I have been to Canepa's, and Bruce is a genuine great guy. We have lodging set up, as I have experienced that issue in the past. The desert heat is what gives me the most trepidation. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Will be departing from the DFW area.

I’ve done Monterey car week with my ‘71 Targa a handful of times and you should expect to have a blast. If you have not done PCH before then don’t miss it. If you have then enjoy the plethora of curvy back roads available off the beaten path. Little in the way of traffic and tons of fun.
Don’t be in a rush. Once north of LA there is much to see and do even before you arrive in Monterey. Now, what’s this AC you speak of?
