Glad to hear level heads have prevailed. I’ll tell a story, so you understand who I am...
I was never in fraternity and really don’t care for the whole culture around them.
The year was 1999, and I was a few years out of college. My best friend was headed to Colorado to house shop and we decided to make a bike, ski and climbing trip out of it. We started in the Tahoe backcountry skiing. Then to Durango for a bit of biking. We finished out the week in Telleride/Ouray doing a winter ascent of a 14er and some ice climbing.
Anyway, we headed down into to town. We started in a bar. Somehow some locals adopted us and we ended up at a house party. At the party we met the son of the Lt Governor of Tennessee and his entourage of frat brothers. We were dirtbagging it, and they offered to let us crash on the floor of their suite up on the mountain.
We migrated over there, and they brought along two drunk girls they had met at the party. Once at the suite they were deliberately loading these girls with shots, planning to have their way with them. Around 2am one of them passed out. One guy in particular thought this was his chance to get laid. My buddy and I interceded. I carried her to the bathroom and put her in the tub. I checked her pulse and breathing and decided she was stable. I told her friend to lock the door behind me and only open it for me.
The guys were so drunk they didn’t really know what happened. We just told him she was using the bathroom. For a while he hovered around the door but after an hour or so he too passed out. I then slipped into the bathroom while my buddy stood guard. I carried her out of the hotel over my shoulder while her friend and my buddy followed. We drove them back to their apt in town and went and slept in the woods.
Actions speak louder than words. I’ve been an ally my whole life. I despise our white male chauvinist culture. Despise it.
