IMHO 18 is too small and 12 is too big. That leaves 16 and 14. I bought 14 and notice it is very close to original. There is a benefit in using single size regardless of the circuits requirements.

In my car I notice three sizes, extra large, large, and medium. The extra large is limited to the battery and starter. The large feeds the fuse block and keyswitch. The medium is everything else. It would be interesting to know what those are in metric and AWG equivalent.
