The best camps are the ones your friends own and that you can use.
I would NOT do it, unless it has an attraction right next to it that has you in the area anyway. I.e. if you are a diehard skier, a cabin makes sense, or if you hunt an area hard and want some land to do it on anyway.
Otherwise, my camp is on wheels. Truck with off-road slide in camper. We have so much public land out west, I can go to different places and still be comfortable. The maintenance is minimal and if it needs it, I can do it in my driveway.
I know you are in a different area and public land camping is not as accessible and the weather isn't favorable much of the year either (too cold in winter and too muggy / buggy in the summer).
