Deoxidizing electrical connections

Ok, I had a mechanic friend suggest I buy something called DeoxIT from radio shack. I do believe that given the age of these cars, they would need something by now. Has anyone tried this stuff? He warned me to disconnect the battery before spraying anywhere as it can cause an arc and start a fire. Thinking this might help all those electrical gremlins we seem to get plus the stuff claims to put some kind of coating on it to keep it from coming back. I know that there has been some kind of dow corning grease or something recommended, but just wondering if anyone as tried this stuff. It is something like $9 a can.
