if you don't want to buy the factory special 901 tool for the low price of $1150, the arnnworx tool usually comes out as the best aftermarket tool and is made specifically for our cars by a 951 enthusiast for $226:

Well considering I purchased the tension tool from our host, one would think that it would work on 944.
I actually tried the J.Kempf 928 cambelt tension tool and that almost fits. I'm considering retro fitting for the spring loaded tensioner. A recent '87 944 purchase for repair has a blown engine with that part.
