thought I would update this thread:

replaced the alt with a rebuilt unit with new volt regulator, plus the MSD 8222 coil. still running the stock distributor rotor, which is a Beru replacement that is less than a year old. car made it the 6.5 hours home without a problem, and I replaced the battery just to be safe (the old battery had made it 15 years, lol). have a resistor-less rotor thanks to Nick, and I'll check in on the stock rotor every now and then - but so far, so good and no hiccups at all with the Beru rotor running together with the MSD 8222.
