Ignition coil - 83 SC
Hi All -
am searching as we speak, but have an emergency (on vacation with a stranded car) so hoping for some quick help (yeah, I know...)... Broke a post on the Bosch ignition coil mucking around to diagnose a failed alternator. Problem is - the Bosch unit is totally unavailable and I need to drive the car home 6 hours in the next week. Any suggestions on a unit that will work in a pinch? Have read conflicting feedback on the MSD, all of the other options seem to be a no-go. Alternatively, any ideas on how to patch up a severed post would also be more than welcome. TIA, now back to searching... |

MSD 8222 works fine, as well as a Bosch vw blue coil.Change it out when you get home if you're worried.

I’ve used the MD 8222 for 16 years no issue. Recently put a new one in for no reason, old one still fine but I kept it in the car as a spare along with a new bosche blue I bought 16 years ago but never tried
Bought the MSD after seeing this thread and Warren saying he tested them https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/167201-msd-blaster-coil.html Whether you can find one locally, not sure

thought I would update this thread:
replaced the alt with a rebuilt unit with new volt regulator, plus the MSD 8222 coil. still running the stock distributor rotor, which is a Beru replacement that is less than a year old. car made it the 6.5 hours home without a problem, and I replaced the battery just to be safe (the old battery had made it 15 years, lol). have a resistor-less rotor thanks to Nick, and I'll check in on the stock rotor every now and then - but so far, so good and no hiccups at all with the Beru rotor running together with the MSD 8222. thanks again to all for the responses, really saved the day for us.

Let me add to John's recommendations:
For those of you looking for a replacement coil in a pinch, the MSD 8222 is designed for a CDI system, as is the Pertonix Blaster 2, and several others. The important point to note is that CDI ignitions work differently than points-and-breaker or transistor switched ignitions. They work best with coils with a low primary resistance, on the order of 0.5 to 0.7 ohms. Any coil with a low primary resistance will work in a pinch, and probably "forever." There is another set of threads in this forum with Systems Consulting about what is the "best" coil to use with the Bosch CDI, and they argue persuasively that the OE Bosch black coil is the "best." It probably is, but if you get say, "only" 35,000 volts instead of 40,000 volts at the spark gap, a substitute coil will light the fire with plenty of energy to spare. Don't believe me? Hand someone your beer and hold the ignition cable while cranking it. Heck, almost any coil will work in a pinch, but get one with the primary coil resistance above if you have a choice. For the curious, the OE Bosch coil measures 0.5 to 0.6 ohms across the primary windings, and about 700 ohms across the secondary windings.
