for anyone who may have been curious:
the answer to my original question is from above. just pull out the engine cover and the wiring harness to the cam position sensor is literally right there.
as a bonus, the chipmunk appears to have only chowed on the oil level sensor sender where it meets the harness (rather than at the sender), which is also a very easy fix from above. the rest of the harness and the sensors look to be in order.
