I have fixed several appliances over the years. There are websites that want to sell you parts, so they have troubleshooting walk-thrus and if you provide your device model they'll usually give you a part number for what you need. Almost all of the stuff that I've fixed (this was probably 15-25 years ago) was probably <$35. We did have a more modern dishwasher fail, and that required a $100 circuit board.
You guys had me curious, so I went and checked our fridge that's currently in the "garage" where it's >97º and that fridge is from ~2009, so 16 years old and still ticking along fine.
