@GH85Carrera, 100%. My KitchenAid would get overhauled over a new one and I hate the side x side design. But it's a tank.

Whooo HOOOO!

I am just a genius, and very modest and humble.

It was indeed the startup relay. The old one rattled when removed. It was not just bad, but blown up. The new relay arrived, and installed and we are back in the modern age of refrigeration. All the for the cost of a $65 relay.

That's great! Don't you feel sorry for folks who would have to call someone or just get another fridge.

Yea, we looked on all the appliance store web pages, and every single fridge was eliminated as a big NOPE. They just don't make them like what we have. A cheap part, and it may well run another 27 years. Heck if it makes is another 20 years we will be in a assisted living home at best.

One can't go around feeling sorry for people that do not have ability. What I feel sorry about is that they will not find an equal replacement. A new appliance is the only thing I would buy an extended warranty for.

That or just buy 2, one for parts that you can replace on the donor as you go, Service call delays and backorders are out of control. YMMV

Nice!

I have fixed several appliances over the years. There are websites that want to sell you parts, so they have troubleshooting walk-thrus and if you provide your device model they'll usually give you a part number for what you need. Almost all of the stuff that I've fixed (this was probably 15-25 years ago) was probably <$35. We did have a more modern dishwasher fail, and that required a $100 circuit board.

You guys had me curious, so I went and checked our fridge that's currently in the "garage" where it's >97º and that fridge is from ~2009, so 16 years old and still ticking along fine.

I have many people tell me I am "lucky I can work on my cars". Luck has nothing to do with it. I was a broke, cheap, and had to keep my car running, and I wanted to learn. Like most of the guys on Pelican, I have a garage full of tools for fixing my cars. I don't ever work on other people's cars. No one could afford my rates as I am the world's slowest mechanic. I am so thankful I did not pursue a career as a pro mechanic.

It also helps that I have had one car for 30 years and the other for 34 years. The only bad thing is I can't blame the previous mechanic for anything anymore.

We must have the same fridge! Our Kenmore water dispenser leaked internally and started rusting out the door from the inside, that was about 2011. It’s been my garage fridge ever since and is still going strong. Meanwhile I’ve replaced two more kitchen fridges that weren’t worth fixing or had crazy lead times for parts during the rona.
