It’s been far too long since my last update! The 964 continues to be a blast to drive and very reliable overall but as with any 35 year old car there are always some mechanical needs and improvements.

With the help of a friend I have accomplished a few things this year. First up, the car needed to be realigned after the suspension settled. I also had an opportunity to wring it out in the canyons and found the front felt a touch loose in high speed sweepers and a touch slow on turn in. We made some changes to the settings and I also adjusted the front rebound to address the loose feeling. The results are incredible, it’s crazy how capable and confidence inspiring a 35 yo car can be. Here’s a picture of the car getting realigned:

When we were finishing up the alignment my friend noted something that I and all the mechanics that had worked on the car in the past didn’t catch. He noted that one of the motor mounts had a 993 part number and the other was the original mount from 1990! Apparently a previous owner thought it would be fine to change just ONE motor mount instead of both and of course the old mount was completely collapsed. So this resulted in a follow on project to install a new set of motor mounts. After lots of research I decided on the Porsche RS mounts instead of the Wevo which is what I used on my Targa. Overall the change was dramatic and I’m happy with the choice. The shifting was the first thing I noticed, I had a slight notch going into 1st and 2nd which is now completely gone. I also had a slight slow speed clutch chatter in reverse that is now gone. I haven’t had a chance to test it too much in the corners but I have noted that the car settles immediately into a turn and also settles faster in transitions. Finally there’s a touch more engine and exhaust noise in the cabin but the chassis feels very tight, like a new car really. Here are some obligatory pics.

Last but not least, I’m towards the tail end of preparing for another concours. The calipers and rotors are holding up well even after some weather and a few thousand miles.
