Gentlemen, thanks for your responses. It was indeed the protrusion. SoCal, you are correct, the protrusion is 180 degrees off between the '87 and '86. I swapped mine from wheel to wheel, but suspect that they could just be turned 180 degrees and the wheels would switch from new to old style (there is even another hole for the horn lead to fit through).
