It is really recommended to drop the engine and the transmission as a unit.
You do have to remove the CV axles from the transmission but that is just a little more work. But it makes it much easier to separate the engine from the tranny, and later on makes it a lot more easy to re-attach the two.
Then, the whole thing comes down, I used furniture wooden dollies to rest the engine on and wheel it around the garage.
