Wayne,
Your instructions were very helpful for me as a first time 911 engine remover! I pinte an xtra page showing the 'checklist' and taped it up in the shop. The only disagreement I have is the eng/tranny or only the eng. removal. :-)) The hex drive bolt over the starter was a bear to get out and had I not taken both eng and tranny out it would have been very dificult. (your instructions has a typo saying "Unfortunately, you CAN see up there, so you will have to figure it out simply by feeling around." You obiously meant 'can't' We used pieces of pipe under the plywood to move the Engine/plywood on the driveway and pushed it up a plywood covered ramp onto a pickup. Altogether a very helpful piece and I thank you for posting it. Ernie |

Quite a few people disagree with me about removing the engine without the transmission. It doesn't quite matter, as removing the tranny too is not that much harder, but definitely more work than you need to do if you are simply performing a clutch job.
Thanks for the feedback! -Wayne |

I had a problem initially installing engine to mate to trans, this is what I found :
The throw out fork was behind the throw out bearing, blocking the full engine - trans mating. The clutch tool was home made in my lathe! to exact tolerance.. ie perfect. This is got to be perfect. The lite / mirror is shown at: http://www.geocities.com/chuckw96/b80_porsche/mirror_lite.jpg There is an access hole that the previous post pointed out at about 11 oclock from the rear of the car in the trans bell housing. When all four bolts from the engine just start to insert into the trans bell housing it is time to line up the fork into the bearing. I had to use a "proctalogist" lite and mirror, with these tools you can look through the access hole (2" dia) and move he fork from the starter hole. With the throw out bearing / fork mated the engine slid in directly. I would strongly suggest that the access hole be used for inspection after the engine / trans is mated to verify the throw out bearing / fork mates correctly. |

The 911 Drop article is great. I have dropped the engine and transmission together already. The 4 nuts have been removed but the transmission isn't pulling off! What to do in this case. I am afraid to pry too hard. I have rocked twisted and shacken...but the wont let go. I get a little gap between the two big enough to insert a screw driver. Its a 1979 911SC with 915 tranny. Any suggestions? |

You need to remove the helper spring and the clutch mechanism below the transmission. This is detailed in the article before you drop the engine (if you were removing engine without transmission)...
Hope this helps, Wayne |

I just read Wayne's procedure to drop 911 engine and found it very clear and properly detailed.
One minor point I like to make, when I click to see figure#47 I get figure#46. I have a question as well, instead of taking the engine out for a clutch job, isn't there a way to take the Transaxle out without the engine. I presume this would reduce the amount of work. I'am about to do a clutch job all by myself on my 82 SC pretty soon that's why I am trying to do as little work as possible. [This message has been edited by ipacketeer (edited 10-20-2001).] |

the allen nut at the starter can be easily accessed by lowering the engine a bit, and getting at it from the top. same with the other top fastener.
no, the trans won't come out without removing the engine. |

It is really recommended to drop the engine and the transmission as a unit.
You do have to remove the CV axles from the transmission but that is just a little more work. But it makes it much easier to separate the engine from the tranny, and later on makes it a lot more easy to re-attach the two. Then, the whole thing comes down, I used furniture wooden dollies to rest the engine on and wheel it around the garage. |
