While 18s will be a bit more susceptible to pothole damage, they will still be ok(just do take car and be aware of what you are driving on/over)
The sweet spot in tires right now is in the 18s. There is the largest selection of appropriate sizes there, 17's will be a close second.
Look for as light and strong a wheel as possible. Forged is usually best. In no partuicular order; Fikse, Kinesis, BBS, SSR, HRE all make very giood choices. In the past Ruf has used wheels which are on the heavy side
