I just installed one in my 912. It sounds like we got the same product. The gray side goes out, but when you bend it sharply. it turns a lighter gray. I preferred black, and sprayed mine with undercoat. It stayed sticky for a long time though. It will make installation much easier if you lower the engine. I put my floor jack under it, loosened the two bolts holding the engine, and let it down until I had enough working space. When I was finished, I jacked it up again and refastened the two bolts. It made the job much easier as I had room to work.
