Anti-siphon coil spring? I did not know our cars were equiped with one. How exactly does it work?...

I find with a lot of gas stations, the angle of the bend in the nozzle doesn't match the bend in the neck of my tank, and it sprays right against the bottom of the tube, and keeps shutting off.
I have to only put it in an inch, maybe 2 or else it will shut off every 5 or 10 seconds.
