Well the 912 E came as the 914 had stoped in production. Karmann was runing out off capasity as the BMW sales boomed and the Scirroco became a big hit too. VW killed the 914 anyhow. The 76 MY was for US only and a mixed 2 month run to the end of 75. Porsche had to much orders on that car and jused the 912 to fill the gap. The thing was when the new 924 was anounced some rushed to the dealers to order a new 924 while others rushed to get a last 914.
The 912 E is basically a 911 and Porsche had the plans for that allready in the shelfs and just needed to make the special 912 items.
The Type 4 was originatet by the Porsche for VW and VW engenieering spend millions to turn the fantastic base engine into a typical VW. Now after the 914/6 was to expensive VW didn´t had a engine to follow up and so Porsche just got there old strked and missussed type 4 back and made the 2,0 out of it by using just the base tuning techologies. VW said thanks and used the new cranks ( the raw is the same Porsche just made other journals and new rods ) with there old heads on the Bus. ( 2,0 70 HP ).
Porsche had in fact an massive overhung on 2,0 heads they allready ordered and why junk good stuff ? Well today we would be happy about the overhung.
BTW the 74 on cars had a anodized aluminium window frame and the car is a black respray on white.
