I'll probably get flamed for suggesting this but...

Wouldn't a rented pressure washer - used carefully of course, save you a LOT of time hogging off the gobbed on hunks of dried grease?

Then AFTER that you could do the degreaser, toothbrush, scouring pad thing but it would take a fraction of the time. Again, I only suggest careful use of the pressure washer.
