Ignition switches do go bad, and heavy key rings are a bad idea. When this starts to happen, you can usually jiggle the key and get action.
But I agree again with Mr. Walker. If you heard a click, it was probably the solenoid. This means the starter motor or solenoid are poopy. Can I say that here?
