The car is a 70 T. She starts most of the time. Somtimes all I get a click that is not as loud as the solenoid fully deploying and nothing more. Click, click, push start, then it starts fine the next time. I have cleaned the cables the batt posts checked the solenoid actuator wire and it all looks good. It does not seem to matter if the car is hot or cold or whatever. Is there another relay I can check? Is this a bad inition switch? When it does crank the starter is very strong. Somtimes I can hold the key in the crank position for a sec. and it suddenly bursts to life! Give up your thoughts. Thanks, Alex.

Alex,
I've seen in previous threads that the key switch often goes bad in the older Porsches especially if you have a heavy key ring. Just a thought Steve 93 C4 |

sounds like a solenoid clicking as it gets power from the switch, then it may not be able to pass the power along to the starter. either that, or it does pass it to the starter, and the starter is shot and won't turn. repl. the assembly .

I thought the heavey key ring thing was for GM cars. Anyway, I had a similar problem on my 86 Carrera and a new starter solenoid took care of that.

My 78 is doing the same thing. Its been doing it for quite sometime now. I believe the starter motor itself is bad not the solinoid. My car always started after two or three tries but I bought a used bench tested starter and Im replacing it soon. We'll see what happens...TargaEuro

Ignition switches do go bad, and heavy key rings are a bad idea. When this starts to happen, you can usually jiggle the key and get action.
But I agree again with Mr. Walker. If you heard a click, it was probably the solenoid. This means the starter motor or solenoid are poopy. Can I say that here? ------------------ '83 SC |
