Ouch! Have you looked at the bottom end yet? It does look like something got loose in there. However, the markings are more pronounced on both "high" spots on the piston, with corresponding marks on the head. Something loose would not have discriminated and would have more than likely made similar marks randomly across the piston and head.
I would think a valve would hit the piston before the piston would hit the head, but is there any chance a rod bearing would disintegrate and create this type of interference?
