Another point. Even the best euro highway is only second best to the average 3 rate highway in the US.

Snow - they do just the way they do it in Japan. With much smaller cars. (On average.) Smaller cars are lighter cars and use much less fuel. Nothing complicated here, pure Newtonian physics. The amount of fuel we burn up on interstate travel and intrastate travel is nothing compared to the daily grind of commuting and running around town in Crown Vics, not-so-mini-mini vans, SUVs and pick-ups.
As for US highways - you must be south of the Mason-Dixon line. Up here they aint so good. I have driven the "M" roads in Britain and heard about the Autobahn and Autostradas. Much better (per mile) than our interstate system.
