The rubber diaphram inside the seperator breaks, allowing a huge vacuum leak, which lets the intake suck in a large amount of oil vapor - leading to engine smoke.
A quick test for this is to have the engine running, open the rear trunk, and remove the oil filler cap and put your hand over the opening. If the vacuum tries to pull your hand in, ot better yet, if the cap is held on with vacuum; you seperator is bad.
