Both the turbo and the gt3 (and variants) have a dry-sump engine crankcase, evolved from the 993. This is true for 996 and 997 models and it is also why engine parts are not interchangeable between 996/997 carrera's and gt3/turbo models.

Boxters have the same engine type as 996/997 carrera's as well..
