Sounds like sciatica. I get the same thing when I wear my wallet in my back pocket when I'm driving the cars, so I always keep my wallet somewhere else and that helps, but occasionally I'll sleep the "wrong way" and will wake up with the same kind of pain. I take Aspirin or Ultram if it's really severe.
