If you don't want to spend much money on the swap and get the same performance gains/sound of the primary/secondary muffler bypass (without the raspy hollow harshness), cut the exhaust after the cat, before the primary muffler, 'turn down' the 90* so it's facing the ground (just loosen the clamp on the cat outlet).
I did this on my 1990 964 C2 with a chip and intake mod. It sounds GREAT! A little loud for some, and i felt a noticable gain on the top end, but felt like i lost a few on the torquey end.
Just fill in the exhaust outlet by hanging the stock tip.
