Jim, If it frosts up again, just put it in cooling mode for a few minutes. This is what happens when it goes into defrost. Actually a few other things happen but as far as the refrigerant cycle goes this is what happens. It is possible that there is a control problem that is not allowing it to go into defrost.
After defrosting which you have done with the hose just set it at a normal setting and see what happens. The label should tell you the refrigerant type. R-22 was the norm, some brands have since changed. If you want to drop me a PM with a cell number I would be happy to discuss it with you.
Oh yeah I did HVAC for a long time and had a state mechanical license, etc.
