Could be fuel or could be the coil as Ron mentioned. Do not feel that oil has anything to do with it.
When was the last time the motor had a good tune up? I would start at square one and do a tune up and oil and fuel filter change unless its been done recently. That may not fix it but eliminates a lot.
Heat could effect the coil or electronic ignition box but feel that once either started to break down that they would continue to do so, and not change when the motor cooled down a bit.
I have an extra ignition box if you want to try that... let me think about this one for a while... If Warren or John could get in on this one feel that they might be a big help here as well.
