Just push on the rod, it will shut the heater damper. What I did was turn the temp control all the way to full heat (so I know the damper is going to be fully open) and you should see the clip rotate, then you can attach the rod since the damper fails open also. turn the temp control to ful cool, then full heat to check but that should fix it!
