heat coming on by itself

With my climate control knob turned all the way the the left (cold) and with my AC off, if I turn the fan on, my car will blow normal temp air that you would expect on this setting, then the heat clicks on by itself (i can hear something) and the heat blasts for about 10 seconds, then goes off for 10 seconds, then on ,then off, etc

what gives? thanks

I think there is a nylon or plastic P clip that traditionally busts on the heater control cables that causes this problem. In fact, I think my car has the same snaglet... I should probably get it fixed by next summer.

Ha: I've just checked Clarks; there is extensive info in the garage manual under heater malfunctions

Cheers
Russell

Just fixed the same thing.

Its the clip thing. For a few bucks and about 5 minutes labor you'll feel like a genius.

So far so good. My 1988 has the plastic cover which some sick engineer attached with three screws that are a freaking PITA to get out. The last one just broke the plastic cover a little, instead of coming out. Anyway I now can see the two metal rods, and YES one of the white plastic clips is in fact broken, the upper/more rearward one. I will get a new clip this week, but now for my next question. I see from the other rod with the good clip that that rod has threads on maybe one inch of its length, and the white clip is centered right on those threads, half inch of threads on either side of the clip. I assume the broken one should be centered the same way once I get the new clip, but the rod is not in the correct position to do that. How do I move the rod so it allows the clip to center properly? I don't want to force it and break it. Thanks !! At least the cause of the heating problem was found, that is a big relief.

Just push on the rod, it will shut the heater damper. What I did was turn the temp control all the way to full heat (so I know the damper is going to be fully open) and you should see the clip rotate, then you can attach the rod since the damper fails open also. turn the temp control to ful cool, then full heat to check but that should fix it!

Let me know how this goes, I had a rod I had trouble moving and maybe moving the temp dial will help...

Hey, you're local! Maybe I'll come visit and you can show me what I'm doing wrong, hehe. =) I did fix ONE of the broken clips though. =)
