Drive the car until it is on "E". The rap on the tank to see if it sounds empty. Chances are your gauge is off calibration. The needles on our gauges move very easily by hand. If the PO was mucking about in the gauges (Rollback?) he/she may have bumped the needle. If the tank sounds like it still has a few gallons in it empty. You can adjust the needle by hand to get it close.
A pinched vent line will make it gurlge and spit when you fill above the line, however it will still fill. IT could "Auto shut off" the gas pump. You should be able to fill slower adn still get it done. The vent line is at the top of the tank around the 19 ggallon mark.
