Cant fill up gas tank??

Hey everyone, I'm a new owner of a 86.5 928, and am wondering why I can only get about 12 gallons into the tank? The gauge also never goes above 3/4.

While I'm at it, there is a small dial wheel and small button under the ignition and I don't know what it does, any help?

Could be the gauge or sender shows less fuel than you actually have. Have you had the 1/4 tank warning light come on?

Under the ignition is I think the wiper interval time.

I have yet to see the indicator light come on, but I read that it has like a 20 gallon gas tank, is this true?

there is a breather hose which connects the part of the tank under the car to the filler neck to allow it to breath and fill up all the way.

This hose will have a kink in it and you will have to drop the tank to replace this hose.

Drive the car until it is on "E". The rap on the tank to see if it sounds empty. Chances are your gauge is off calibration. The needles on our gauges move very easily by hand. If the PO was mucking about in the gauges (Rollback?) he/she may have bumped the needle. If the tank sounds like it still has a few gallons in it empty. You can adjust the needle by hand to get it close.

A pinched vent line will make it gurlge and spit when you fill above the line, however it will still fill. IT could "Auto shut off" the gas pump. You should be able to fill slower adn still get it done. The vent line is at the top of the tank around the 19 ggallon mark.

The gas tank looks like a teapot and the filler spout attaches down low, if the vent line from the main body to near the top of the spout is blocked a huge air bubble is trapped and it will not fill up. That vent hose is supposed to pass through a hole in the frame rail if someone puts the hose on FIRST then puts the tank up in the car that vent hase get squashed shut.

Another possibility is that if the PO rarely filled the tank and the upper end of the resistance wires in the sender became lacquered, it could cause the float to stick. Definitely check out Jim Bailey's suggestion first.

Fuel tank is I think 23.5 gals, and I've put 23 in more than a few times. Don't think I ever did a $100 fillup yet.

If the car is new to you, R&R of the fuel tank is a good idea. Pull the tank, flush it out, inspect it, paint the support frame and renew the strap pads, new hoses, new fuel filter etc.

The fuel level sender is easily seen accessed from inside the car under the cargo carpet is a black plastic plug. The level sender has a cap (like an old Mason Jar lid) also a fuel return hose the excess fuel sent to the engine returns here. If you were to" fill " the tank as it is now you could then loosen the return hose CAREFULLY and see if gasoline runs out. You can also run it down near where it shows empty or the warning light comes on and remove the sending unit and look inside the tank to see IF it really is near empty.

Sometimes that Sender doesn't play nice to remove. Mine was caught on that plastic cap that covers the bowl on the "inside bottom" of the tank. That maybe my problem, I tugged and pulled so many times on that sender, I probably broke the sender. Jim, still got a used Sender for 50% off?
