My view is that distance is all relative. 300 miles for me is 1/2 a day's drive and more than worth it to go and check out a 'maybe'.
From experience, the dilemma is more whether of whether you actually want the car. If this was definite 'must have' you would have drove there after work.
Not trying to be critical or negative, but for me the 300 miles is a non-issue. Then again I'm not really close to anything and used to live nowhere near anything.
Good luck with the choice, but my advice is to fire up your current beast and go for a Saturday drive. If nothing else you get a good day on the highway.
